Beaches

Barra’s beaches are part of everyday life here — wide, bright stretches of sand where the kids can explore to their hearts’ content, and where you can take a quiet wander for yourself as well. From sheltered coves to the big open bays, each spot has its own feel. Up at Traigh Mhòr you might even catch the planes landing on the sand. Wherever you go, the island meets you with calm and fresh air.

Eating Out or In

Eating on Barra and Vatersay is easy and relaxed. In Castlebay you’ll find Café Kisimul for curries and local seafood, the community-run Bùth Bharraigh for picnic supplies and home baking, and simple cafés and bars for a hot plate and a chat.

Around the islands there are pizza nights, chippies and hotel restaurants with harbour views, plus coffee at Ardmhor before or after the ferry.

If you’re self-catering, local shops, the butcher and fish van keep you well stocked. Each place has its own rhythm; we’ll point you to our regular spots and let you choose your favourites too.
